They draw and Cook

In February 2019, They Draw and Cook announced a new Design Challenge, “Eat the Rainbow”. And while my first thought was to draw something with fruits and vegetables (which I later did), I also thought of the amazing structured compositions of sushi displays I’ve seen in restaurants, and the colors of each piece of sushi.

Sketching

Whenever I start an illustration, it usually begins with a doodle. I don’t keep a traditional sketchbook, my drawings tend to bleed out wherever the inspiration strikes, and that’s either on copier paper or on my iPad Pro. I love copier paper because there is something super low stakes about drawing on it that relieves the mental blocks that you are making something on a previous material and you cannot waste it. My application of choice for this illustration was Procreate. I have a go-to brush that gives me the fine lines but also allows me to create thick marks. Also, the undo button. Super important.

At this point, if I am working in Procreate, I start working on my composition. I now have all these amazing shapes that I want to incorporate, and since I am treating this like a bento, a very structured look, I start playing with the organization, while also taking into account the colors of the sushi since I want a rainbow effect.

Timelapse

One of my favorite features of Adobe Sketch and Procreate is the ability to record and export a timelapse. I think its an amazing way to see how an image comes together.
